History of The BlueGrass Street Hockey League
Hockey in Western Kentucky began in November of 2003 in the Cougar Center at Mid-Continent University. It was a mixed game of some with experience and some with no knowledge of the game at all! We began with solid plastic sticks and goals that had duct tape holding them together. From Mid-Continent we moved to the First Baptist Church parking lot in Mayfield, Kentucky.
In the parking lot we began with an average of about 6, maybe on a good day we would have 10. Finally we rented our first ever building to play in, The Hardin Community Building, that first night we had 16 people, 6-7 which had never held a stick before in their life. After one night several people were hooked! We began playing on Friday nights every other week. Crowds began to soar into the 20’s. Than the beginning of the famous Mayfield Savers.
Six months later we started the first season of The BlueGrass Street Hockey League. By the end of the 2nd season we were seeing more than 50 people coming to play hockey every Saturday morning. Each season we seeing record setting stats being set with goals, assists, and points, showing how well we are developing as a league.
The game of hockey is alive and kicking in Western Kentucky, and is about to take off. Just one year into playing this awesome game the BGHL has been affiliated with the “Street Hockey USA,” “ The Memphis RiverKings,” and has a sponsorship with Save-A-Lot grocery stores and has a wonderful working relationship with the National Guard Armory which is home to the BGHL.
For everyone that began this dream with us, sit back and enjoy, the road is as long as we want it to be. This is a dream come true for me, and I am the luckiest man alive to be apart of it! I never could have dreamed of the family I have now, and each and everyone of you are family members. This thing is not about individuals, its about teams, and relationships. Each one of you is the heart of this league! Thank you for making my hockey dreams come true!
God Bless,
